The life of truck drivers is beautiful, yet not easy. Far from home, they cover countless kilometers, and driving all day is exhausting both physically and mentally. During a long journey, what could recharge a tired driver better than a delicious, warm lunch or a hearty dinner?

Unfortunately, there is not always a suitable opportunity on the road to eat in a restaurant or diner. However, there’s no need to worry about that anymore, as with the right equipment, we can turn the driver’s cabin into a cooking space anytime—no magic required. But how?
In this article, we present the tools that make life easier for drivers on the road when it comes to preparing meals, ensuring that lunch and dinner are always fresh, tasty, and nutritious—as if we were eating at home!
Cooking in a truck: why is it good to have the option?
At first, many might think that having the option to cook while trucking is just an extra perk reserved for adventurous drivers. After all, every highway offers diners, buffets, and gas stations where a tired traveler can rest and satisfy their hunger. Those who have ever sat in a truck and set off on a long journey, however, are probably shaking their heads in strong disagreement—and not without reason.
It often happens that during a trip, we cannot find a place where we can eat properly. A freshly cooked, warm meal, however, is important in many ways during a journey of several hundred kilometers. On the one hand, because something fresh always feels good for our stomach. Especially on a long trip, when we might need warmth, delicious homemade flavors, and the energy provided by quality ingredients.
In addition, it is, of course, healthier. If we cook for ourselves, we know exactly what ends up on our plate. This way, we can be sure that our lunch or dinner does not contain as many preservatives, colorings, and additives as sandwiches and ready-made meals bought at gas station shops.
Not to mention that cooking can save us a lot of money. The ready-made meals mentioned are not only unhealthy but also expensive. The same goes for restaurants and diners along the way. That is why it is worth getting the tools and equipment that allow us—if not always, then at least occasionally—to prepare our favorite meals even while traveling.

Electric or gas cooking: which device should we choose if we want to cook on the road?
If we want to end the day on the road with a delicious, fresh, warm meal, we will need several things. The first and most important is, of course, the device that allows us to turn the driver’s cabin into a cooking space. For this purpose, we can choose between two solutions. A portable stove can be electric or gas-powered. Naturally, both options have their advantages and disadvantages.
- Electric devices: advantages and disadvantages
The big advantage of electric devices is that they can be used indoors (with proper safety precautions). Their biggest drawback, however, is that they can easily drain the battery during operation, which can cause serious issues on a long trip. Therefore, when using electric accessories, it is worth using a voltmeter to avoid overloading the truck with extra consumption. Due to the high load (for example when using an electric oven), it may also be advisable to install the device permanently.
If we decide on electric cooking, we can choose from several devices. Electric ovens are generally lower-power appliances, such as sandwich makers. They are often useful and serve their purpose, but it is important to know that they are only suitable for preparing simpler meals. While you can easily make a toasted sandwich or reheat food, preparing something like a layered potato dish would be difficult. A similar device is the electric frying pan, which, besides reheating, is also perfect for making scrambled eggs or simple one-pot meals.
The rice cooker, on the other hand, offers far more possibilities. Despite its name, it is not only suitable for cooking rice as a side dish. It is also ideal for preparing main courses, including pasta and stews. In fact, if we are determined enough, we can even bake pizza in it. By browsing YouTube, we can find countless mouth-watering recipes that can be easily prepared using a rice cooker. That is why it is no coincidence that the rice cooker is considered essential equipment for many truck drivers when heading out on a long journey. It is important to know that rice cookers are available in 12 V, 24 V, and 230 V versions.
In addition to the two types mentioned, one of the most common electric cooking devices is the microwave oven, which is found in almost every home. However, it is important to note that while choosing a home microwave is easy, selecting one for use in a truck requires more consideration. A standard microwave, for example, can only be used with a power inverter. Although this may seem like a cost-effective solution, it has many disadvantages: it quickly damages the batteries, is not good for the truck, and the microwave itself will not last long on the road, as it was not designed to sit in a constantly moving vehicle.
Instead, we can choose a microwave specifically designed for trucks, which meets all expectations: it withstands vibrations, has good performance, and does not damage the batteries even with regular use. Its only drawback is the price. A microwave designed specifically for truck drivers can cost as much as 200,000–300,000 HUF.

- Gas cooking: advantages and disadvantages
Compared to electric cooking, gas cooking does not strain the truck’s systems. As a result, it is considered a traditional and proven method. However, it is important to know that it can be more dangerous if not handled properly. Ventilation is essential during use, as combustion consumes oxygen, which can even lead to fatal consequences. When safety rules are followed, however, gas cooking is a practical solution, as it is simple, reliable, and does not require worrying about battery condition.
Even small gas cylinders and cartridges last surprisingly long and can be used efficiently multiple times. Larger refillable cylinders are even more practical. In this case, however, it is important to know that refillable cylinders can only be filled at designated locations.
When it comes to gas cooking, we can also choose from several types of devices. Our range includes traditional gas burners that can be used with 2–3 kg cylinders, as well as various cartridge-based gas stoves. However, it is important to note that 2 kg and 3 kg cylinders cannot be used inside the cabin! For the portable gas stove with case, we provide a 227 g cartridge. For convenient use, we also recommend flame diffusers. If we are only looking for a device for heating, a metal-bodied gas stove with a 190 g cartridge is a good choice. For convenience, it is also a good idea to get a few metal mugs.
Ultimately, whether we choose electric or gas cooking depends on several factors. On the one hand, personal preference, and on the other, what other tools and accessories we have available to ensure that meals prepared in the truck are always fresh and delicious. We will discuss these in more detail shortly, but first, let’s take a look at the rules that are essential for safe cooking.
Written and unwritten rules: what to watch out for when using the cabin as a kitchen
As mentioned above, in the case of electric devices, load is the most important factor to consider. Many believe that the cigarette lighter socket can handle anything, but this is not true, and it is crucial to pay attention to the power of the device used.
If the load is not appropriate, there is a risk of electrical fire—meaning that carelessness can easily set the truck on fire. Therefore, using electric cooking devices with a cigarette lighter splitter is not necessarily recommended. If there is no other option, use at least the stronger 12A version!
In contrast, for gas stoves, proper ventilation is what we must always pay attention to. Gas leaks in enclosed spaces can easily be fatal. It is also important to comply with legal regulations regarding dangerous gas concentrations. If regulations do not explicitly allow it, the device may only be used outdoors, meaning it is prohibited to use it inside the cabin!
Therefore, when cooking with gas, always ensure proper ventilation of the cabin. For maximum safety, we can also use a gas leak detection spray.
Besides safety, hygiene is also important. Make sure that all equipment is always clean. Wash your hands before cooking and clean the ingredients. If meat is involved, pay special attention to thoroughly cleaning cutting boards, knives, and other utensils.

Gas cylinders: how to choose the right one?
It is important to note that gas cylinders differ not only in size and weight but also in their connections. Before choosing the right cylinder, we need to know what type of connection our burner has. Manufacturers use different valve systems, and the cylinders compatible with them are not interchangeable.
The simplest type is the puncture-type cylinder, which has no valve at all. After piercing, it must be connected to the stove and cannot be disconnected until empty. These cylinders are no longer widely produced due to safety concerns. They are harder to transport, as the assembled device takes up more space, and the cylinder is fragile. Since they are not refillable, they are not environmentally friendly.
The most common type today is the threaded valve system. This allows the cylinder to be detached after cooking. It is a practical solution, as even small cylinders (as little as 100 g) are available. Reliable, relatively easy to obtain, refillable, and environmentally friendly. However, improper attachment can damage the thread, so replacement should always be done carefully.
The third type is the bayonet valve system. Instead of a thread, it features a polygonal indentation where the stove can simply be snapped into place. Bayonet cylinders are reliable, relatively easy to obtain, refillable, and environmentally friendly. What’s especially convenient is how easy it is to attach devices to them.
Always carefully review the manufacturer’s recommendations before using any cylinder with your stove!

How long can a gas cylinder be used?
One of the most common questions regarding gas stoves is how long a cylinder lasts. This depends on several factors: the size of the cylinder, how often we cook, and the heat level used.
Based on this, a 225–250 g cylinder is enough for about 3 days of cooking, while a 220 g valve cylinder provides about 3 hours of use at maximum output. Manufacturers usually indicate how many grams of gas a burner consumes per hour. Therefore, to be safe, it is worth choosing the right size cylinder before traveling.
As mentioned earlier, some cylinders are refillable. This is possible even for smaller 2 kg cylinders. However, refilling is only allowed at designated locations.
Other accessories needed for cooking
Of course, a good cooking device alone is not enough. We also need several accessories to ensure that fresh and delicious food can always be prepared on the road. One of these is a refrigerator or cooler, where we can store ingredients and even prepared meals if we plan ahead.
It is important to know that a cooler suitable for chilling a few bottles of water or soda may not be suitable for keeping food and ingredients fresh. We have covered coolers and storage boxes in detail in a previous article, where you can learn about the key differences between types and how to choose the right one for your needs.
A water container is also essential, as water is indispensable for both cooking and hygiene. It is worth getting as large a container as possible. Experience shows that a solution of around 20 liters with a tap is ideal.
Depending on what meals we want to prepare, various cookware and utensils are also indispensable. Moreover, we can even buy a grill plate for our gas stove, allowing us to prepare delicious grilled meats and vegetables anywhere, anytime—just like at a weekend barbecue.

More tools to make traveling more comfortable
For a more comfortable journey, it is worth getting a few additional items. For example, a water heater can be useful not only for cooking but also for making morning coffee or tea. In this case, it is important to know whether the system is 12 V or 24 V so that we can choose the right device. And since coffee has come up, a coffee maker is also essential. We can choose between electric coffee machines and traditional stovetop ones. The advantage of the former is that it can be used even without a gas stove. This also applies to modern capsule coffee machines.
Finally, an electric thermos can also be useful, especially in winter when keeping drinks warm is essential. Whether it’s hot coffee or tea, a thermos is indispensable. It can also be used to store water if we suddenly need a cup of hot water for instant soup or anything else.
