ADR plate holder – you slide the plate in from the top, the retaining tab holds it, and the aluminium frame does not rust outdoors.

An ADR plate holder is a weatherproof aluminium frame that fixes the orange ADR plate to a vehicle carrying dangerous goods (lorries, trucks, trailers). It is made for the 300x400 mm plate. It is for drivers, haulage companies and workshops that carry dangerous goods.

One aluminium holder, 300x400 mm, with four countersunk holes. The plate and the screws or rivets are not included.

At a glance

  • Size: 300x400 mm, both the outside size of the holder and the size of plate it takes
  • Material: aluminium with a black edge
  • Fixing: screws or rivets, open side up, onto a flat surface; four holes spaced 180 x 140 mm
  • Plate goes in: from the top, the tab folds over the plate's edge
  • Best for: vehicles carrying dangerous goods, to hold the orange ADR plate
  • Not included: the ADR plate and the screws or rivets

Key benefits

  • Plate slides in from the top: the holder stays on the vehicle with its open side up, so you slide the plate in from above without taking the holder off.
  • Retaining tab: the tab folds over the top edge of the plate, so the plate does not slide out through the open top.
  • Edge on three sides: the edges of the holder keep the plate in place on three sides.
  • Four countersunk holes, 180 x 140 mm: the head of the screw or rivet sits in the hole instead of standing proud, so it does not block the plate from sliding in.
  • Aluminium: it does not rust and is made for outdoor use.
  • 300x400 mm: the standard ADR orange plate is 40 x 30 cm (source). The holder is made for that size, and any 300x400 mm plate fits.

We brought this holder in because we have sold to truck drivers since 1991 and we know what they need on the road and what holds up.

Which ADR plate does this holder take?

Any 300x400 mm ADR plate, for example the plain orange plate without numbers. The holder itself is also 300x400 mm outside, so measure your mounting surface before you buy: you need a flat area at least that size.

It is not for magnetic ADR plates: those are used without a holder. The smaller reduced-size 300x120 mm plate needs a smaller holder. This one is made for 300x400 mm plates.

How to fit the ADR plate holder

  1. Pick a flat surface on the vehicle where the plate is clearly visible. For packaged goods the orange plate goes at the front and rear.
  2. Put the holder on with the open side up and fix it through the four holes with screws or rivets.
  3. Slide the plate in from the top. The tab folds over the top edge of the plate.

Tip for the fixings: use countersunk stainless (A2/A4) or galvanised screws with a nyloc nut and a washer, or stainless or aluminium pop rivets. The head must not stand proud, or the plate will not slide in. Plain steel screws will rust.

Frequently asked questions

Does a magnetic ADR plate fit?
It is not meant for it. The ADR plate holder is made for plain 300x400 mm plates, and magnetic plates are used without a holder.

Which ADR plates fit in the holder?
Any 300x400 mm ADR plate. The ADR plate holder is also 300x400 mm outside.

Does the plate go in from the top or the side?
From the top. The ADR plate holder is fitted with its open side up, the plate slides in from above, and the tab folds over the plate's edge.

Do I need screws or rivets to fit it?
Either works, but neither is in the box. The ADR plate holder has four countersunk holes, so use countersunk screws or pop rivets so the head does not block the plate.

Where does the ADR plate go on the vehicle?
At the front and rear, upright and clearly visible. If you want a holder in both places you need two, because the box holds one ADR plate holder.

What size is a standard ADR plate?
40 cm wide and 30 cm high, with a black border. This ADR plate holder is for 300x400 mm plates.

Important information

  • The ADR plate holder does not replace the plate, which you need separately.
  • We do not give the hole diameter, so choose screws or rivets that match the hole.
  • When the vehicle is not carrying dangerous goods the orange plates should be removed or covered.
  • We do not summarise the ADR rules, and the exact rule depends on the load you carry.

If you have a flat area of at least 300x400 mm on the vehicle and can screw or rivet, this holder will suit your 300x400 mm ADR plate.
